LED Downlights vs Halogen: The Real Cost Difference
Halogen downlights were the standard in Australian homes through the 2000s and 2010s. They produce good light quality but use significantly more power than modern LEDs and run much hotter.
The Numbers Side by Side
| Spec | Halogen (50W) | LED (8W) |
|---|---|---|
| Power draw | 50 watts | 8 watts |
| Lumens (brightness) | ~600 lm | ~700 lm |
| Lifespan | ~2,000 hours | ~25,000 hours |
| Annual running cost (4hrs/day @ 30c/kWh) | ~$22 per globe | ~$3.50 per globe |
The Payback Calculation
12 downlights, 4 hours per day: halogens cost ~$264/year in electricity. LEDs cost ~$42/year. Annual saving: ~$222. At an average installed cost of $75-90 per LED conversion, the full job of 12 lights pays for itself in electricity savings in under 5 years. LED globes then run for another decade without replacement.
What the Conversion Involves
If your existing downlights use GU10 or MR16 fittings, many cases allow a direct lamp swap. MR16 halogens running on 12V transformers need the transformers checked — some are incompatible with LEDs and need replacing. A licensed electrician can assess your existing setup and quote accordingly.
