Home Security Cameras: DIY vs Professionally Installed
The temptation to grab a four-camera kit from Bunnings for $200 is real. For some situations it might be fine. But there are real differences between consumer wifi cameras and a properly installed hardwired system.
Consumer WiFi Cameras
WiFi cameras have improved significantly. Easy to install, phone alerts, some have decent night vision. The limitations:
- Rely on your home WiFi staying up
- Batteries need changing or need power outlet access
- Footage stored in the cloud — typically a monthly subscription
- Can be physically unplugged or taken from outside
- Image quality limited by WiFi bandwidth
Professionally Installed Hardwired Systems
A proper CCTV install uses hardwired cameras — PoE (power over ethernet) or direct wired — connected to an NVR inside the home. The advantages:
- No WiFi dependency — works if your internet goes down
- Local NVR storage — no cloud subscription required
- Cameras can't be unplugged from outside
- Remote viewing via app still works when you're away
- Higher resolution, more consistent image quality
- Cables run through the roof space, not hanging exposed
📹 A 4-camera hardwired PoE system with NVR professionally installed: typically $1,200–$2,000. One-off cost, no ongoing subscription.
