Does Your NSW Home Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

📅 April 2025 ⏱ 5 min read ✍️ Nate's Rates Electrical, Newcastle NSW

What's in an Old Switchboard?

Older Australian homes were wired with ceramic fuse holders that used a thin wire to protect circuits. When a circuit overloaded, the wire melted — eventually. The problem is that fuse wire can be replaced with the wrong gauge, bypassing the protection entirely. It's also a fire risk in ways that modern circuit breakers simply aren't.

If your home was built before 1990, there's a solid chance it still has the original switchboard. If those are ceramic fuse holders rather than plastic circuit breakers, you have a problem worth paying attention to.

Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

  • Ceramic fuse holders — the old bakelite or porcelain type
  • No RCDs or safety switches fitted to any circuit
  • Fuses or breakers tripping more than occasionally
  • The board is warm to touch or makes buzzing sounds
  • You're renovating or adding new circuits to the home
Insurance note: Many home insurers in NSW now specifically ask whether safety switches are installed. If you don't have them and make a claim involving electrical, your cover may be affected.

What a Modern Switchboard Includes

A modern upgrade replaces the old fuse board with individual circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual current devices (RCDs) for safety. Each circuit gets its own labelled breaker. You also receive a Certificate of Compliance — legally required for all licensed electrical work in NSW.

Typical Cost in Newcastle

A standard domestic switchboard upgrade in the Newcastle area typically costs $900–$2,000 installed, depending on board size and wiring condition. Get a free assessment — Nate will tell you exactly what yours needs.
